Sulfate Removal from Water
Sulfate can be removed from water and wastewater by ion exchange and reverse osmosis. It can also be precipitated by the addition of barium, although this method is limited due to the high cost and toxicity of the barium.
At higher concentrations, above 1500 ppm, sulfate can be precipitated as calcium sulfate. To remove concentrations below 1500 ppm, a two step process would be used, reverse osmosis to concentrate the sulfate in the retentate and precipitation of calcium sulfate from the retentate.
